deoch an dorais

deoch an dorais

There is a fine Irish movie called Waking Ned Devine, and in that movie, there is a scene at the end where the men are standing on a cliff toasting each other with their glasses of whiskey. The song that plays out at the end is called The Parting Glass.

So fill to me the parting glass
And drink a health whate’er befalls
Then gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be to you all

Today’s Irish word of the day is deoch an dorais, the parting glass. It is pronounced deeUK un DARish.
