“This old blog” and me have been around in one form or another since 2005 – that’s a long time!
And we’ve come a long way from our first tentative steps as “Straight Up & Slightly Dirty” on the Blogger platform.
That’s where we learned about Blog Carnivals, Commenting, Oversharing, and that you attract an “Interesting” audience with a name like that!
After a short hiatus, we were back at it again with “Lala Land” still on the Blogger platform. I even paid a graphic artist 30 whole dollars to create the masthead using my own signature cursive L. My vision for this blog was admittedly a little muddled with the Disney visual references, and yet no real Disney content – but the name was a keeper. I learned a little more here, about Stats, and Analytics and the limited capabilities on Blogger.
So Lala Land moved from Blogger to the WordPress free platform, and we felt all grown up – for a while…
Until I learned about self-hosting! So I took the plunge and purchased my own domain, and signed on with a web hosting service – which, by the way, costs quite a bit more than $30 and has a significantly longer learning curve! Once all of that was done, I agonized over choosing just the right template or theme, and then spent days and days picking fonts, creating a logo (using that same cursive L!), writing a professional About page, adding plug ins and widgets, and tweaking, tweaking tweaking!
I do know that a blog, no matter how pretty, without creative writing, or interesting content is like putting lipstick on a pig… but for now, I’m just focusing on the lipstick.
And now, yet another evolution. Still Lalaland, still WordPress, still self hosted, just a more modern theme. And again, focusing on the lipstick again.
We certainly have come a long way, Lala Land and me, but the journey, as in anything worthwhile, has been a great adventure. I’d love to hear your comments – good, bad, or indifferent!
Thanks for visiting!

Love the new look and how you’ve pulled “lala” all the way through the navigation. Kudos!

Thank you Kirsten! Coming from you that means a lot! Still trying to justify misspelling Genealogy as GeneLALAgy with my overbearing inner grammar-nazi… we shall see which side wins out!

Thanks so much for stopping by my blog, Linda! Congrats on the big move to self-hosted on WordPress. I made the leap about a year and a half ago, and am so glad I did!
